Gary made me a cold frame one year (before I got the greenhouse). I casually mentioned that I had a feeling I was going to run out of room in the house for all the seeds I had started. The next thing I knew he had begun making this cold frame. Because there are so many panes in the door he used for the lid, Gary put in a Plexiglas window in the front to add more light, since the panes are shading the intereior. A cold frame really should have more of a slant to allow more light to come in, but I needed the height. I think the window in front will help a lot.

Cold Frame

This was made very simply using a sheet of plywood, scrap 2 x 2s for the corners and scrap strips of molding to hold the Plexiglas in the front. The door is just laid on top (no hinges) and I can prop it open with some scrap pieces of wood. We did not hinge it because we wanted to be able to take it apart very easily when we are done with it for the spring. Gary added a little strap to the front so I could pull on it when putting the door back down.

After a few weeks, the cold frame worked very well, but the door was very heavy to open and close. It's not really an issue unless it is watering time, but in a pinch it works.

Bird TreeBird Tree

This "Bird Tree", as I like to call it, was constructed using landscape timbers that we had lying around leftover from another project. Gary purchased plans for making this tree, but had to make some modifications to it because it didn't seem very sturdy to him when he was putting it together, but it is sturdy now.

These two benches were made from untreated landscape timbers and came in handy when we needed them for extra seating for a outdoor party.

Wooden Toolbox Planter

This toolbox can be used indoors or outdoors (You can see another version of it here). It can be used to store garden tools or used for harvesting fruits and vegetables or as a pretty planter. We currently have some for sale in our Etsy shop.
